FAQ - Facts & Questions
Where do you get your books from?
We get our used inventory from books people bring in to the store. You can donate, you can trade or you can sell used books.
How does trading or selling used books works?
Here's how it works. We will go through the boxes or bags you bring us and say "yay" or "nay" to each title. For the books we want, we add up the new book prices and do a little math. If you are trading, you get 25% of the total to put towards other used books (you cannot trade used books for new books or for games, stickers, etc.). If you are selling, you get 10% of that total.
So, what are we looking for when it comes to used books?
We have a few general guidelines that help us determine what we will or will not take. We don't take hard cover copies of new fiction (except in very rare cases). We will consider some classics and certain non-fiction titles in hard covers. We don't take old library books. And obviously, we won't take anything with missing covers, pages, etc. The books we accept have to be in good condition.
Will you buy any old book?
We will also say no to titles that we don't think we can sell. Some authors and subjects just don't appeal to the majority of readers these days. We don't have the space for every book that comes our way. Another thing we consider is how many copies of a title we may already have. We just don't need ten copies of something, even if it is a "hot new title."
So why would anyone donate when they can trade or sell?
Sometimes you may not want to go through the process of sorting out those stacks of books in the basement: you just want them gone. If that's the case, you can drop off books here and not have to worry about them again. We will go through them and get rid of the ones we can't use. (When you trade or sell, you have to take the "rejects" away with you.)
Do I need to make an appointment to bring in my books?
There is no need to make an appointment to bring books in. But please be advised that if you bring a "truckload" in, it is going to take us some time to sort through them, especially if the store is busy. Often, people drop their books off and go do other errands while we sort through them.
